SBP VALUES

This app is intended to help EHP students learn typically normal systolic blood pressure (SPB) readings measured in millimeters of mercury (mm HG).

It is provided for inspirational and amusement purposes only. Please read my full disclaimer and privacy policy.

There are significant variations in the literature to age-related, normal, EMS vital signs, and the issue is clouded with parameters such as waking status, pain status, sex, and individual genetics. There is also a lack of clarity concerning what is normal, what is healthy, what is acceptable, what requires intervention, and what age spans to use.

The values used in this app come from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. They seem to be intended as general guidelines that can be easily remembered:

Typically Normal Systolic
Blood Pressures in mm Hg
Infant* 50-95
Child 80-110
Adult 90-140

*Premature infants typically have lower BP measurements than full-term infants. Measuring the blood pressure of a patient under three years old is unlikely to be within an EMR's or EMT's scope of practice.

Blood pressure readings are measured in even increments when taken manually and can be even or odd when taken with a machine. This app assumes readings are taken with a machine.

The exact definition of "Infant" and "Child" is unclear. Broadly assume that an infant is less than 2 years old, and a child is between 2 and 18 years old.

The upper and lower numbers in the ranges are included within normal limits in this app (i.e. "90" and "140" are within normal limits for an adult.)
